Why Your Small Business Needs Cyber Security Help

The number of cyber-attacks in the UK continued to rise again in 2021 and the UK remains in the top 3 most attacked countries in the world (Sonic Wall Security Map). Micro businesses (less than 100 employees, including sole-traders) bear a disproportionate brunt of these, with the UK government reporting that in 2021, 38% of micro business owners suffering at least one cyber attack at an average cost of over £8000. Of that 38%, 27% reported being attacked at least once per week. Remember these are just the ones that report the breaches. There will be more that are unaware of a breach or fail entirely to report it.

As the infographic by Secure Team below shows, small & micro businesses are subjected to over 65,000 attacks per day. Whilst thankfully, the overwhelming majority of these attacks fail, worryingly a small business in the UK is successfully hacked once every 19 Seconds!. These attacks come at an average cost to businesses of around £8500. Start adding to that the loss of earnings from downtime, the loss of business as a result of decreased client trust and the cost of implementing measures to prevent a re-occurance of the attack and suddenly, a cyber attack could have real detrimental effects on a business.

Luckilly, it has never been easier for businesses to prepare themselves for an attack. Conducting a cyber health check to understand how your business may be at risk (your threat landscape), from what threats (your exposure) and avenues to protect yoruself, is the first step in ensuring you are prepared to deal with modern threats.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking this won't happen to you. 1 in 4 small to medium businesses will be attacked in 2022. No security measure is 100% effective against all threats and you need to review your business security regularly to ensure you are as protected as possible.
